Every Dec. 8, the Church observes the feast of the Immaculate Conception, and without fail, people think that this refers to Jesus’ conception, when it is actually the celebration of Mary being conceived without sin. We can understand it by looking again at the scene of the Annunciation. The Angel left the Virgin alone in a difficult situation. The problem is with the word “immaculate.” This is a negative word, meaning, “not spotted or stained.” The stain in question is of course original sin. I would also like to underline the word with which Mary defines herself in her surrender to God: she professes herself “the handmaid of the Lord”. This was possible thanks to her “yes”.
